Construction site safety inspection blitz launched by WorkCover
An urgent six week safety review targeting multi-level construction sites across Sydney and NSW has been launched by WorkCover after another high profile incident where a fire shut down the Baranagroo construction site causing a major peak hour traffic incident in Sydney’s CBD.
WorkCover announced that a team of 30 safety inspectors will target the commercial building sector and meet with major contractors to inform them of the blitz. The action comes in response to the Barangaroo fire and other incidents including the crane tower fire at the UTS and a scaffolding collapse at O’Riordan Street Mascot.
This latest incident and subsequent WorkCover blitz place an emphasis on ensuring that the owners and operators of construction sites have systems in place that support contractor management particularly in relation to contractors and sub-contractors, with a focus on cranes and scaffolding.
The development of an effective Contractor Management System is supported through the findings of a workplace safety audit.
WorkCover inspections will cover the Sydney area as well as construction sites across regional NSW.
