Safety with chemicals in an integral part of occupational health and safety training

ChemicalsRecent reports about the evacuation of a childcare centre due to chemical fumes provides a timely reminder about chemicals and safety in the workplace.

On 6 September the Adelaide  News  website reported that about ‘80 children were evacuated from a childcare centre after a staff member had used a cleaner designed for dishwashers to hand-clean cooking equipment. It resulted in fumes entering the building’s ventilation”

The correct storage and labeling of hazardous substances is an integral part of safe work practices in all industries and not just high risk worksites.

In December 2011 SafeWork Australia introduced a Code of Practice ‘Labelling of Workplace Hazardous Chemicals – http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/formspublications/publications/Documents/1labelling-workplace-hazardous-chemicals-code-of-practice-3562.pdf
