Safety Group September webinar

September 7, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

You are invited to the Safety Group September webinar which will be held on Wednesday 15 September 2021 – 0800-0900.

Topic: Why solar UV protection is a WH&S no brainer – and how you can do it well!

In this session, we will focus on: Sun safety should be incredibly important to WH&S planning in Australia, based on the high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun throughout the year and the fact that we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Often UV radiation is not considered a typical workplace hazard; many think the risks aren’t that serious and assume the job has been done. This is not the case.
·       Solar UV radiation is a group 1 carcinogen, in the same category as asbestos and tobacco.
·       Outdoor workers are exposed to up to 5-10 times more solar UV radiation than the average population, significantly increasing their skin cancer risk.
·       The good news is that skin cancer, including melanoma, is one of our most preventable cancers.

The goal of this presentation is to reframe the prevention of skin cancer and UV radiation exposure as a high risk, long term hazard for outdoor workers that requires workplace leadership and support. In this webinar, Liz will overview the most effective and time efficient approaches to integrating safe UV practices into workplaces and provide best practice insights into how sustained change can be achieved.

While we know all Australian workplaces have Work Health and Safety obligations that require a safe working environment that is free from risks to health, Liz will also outline how previous skin cancer claims were successful in court and how you can ensure you have a safe workplace that protects your staff.

Presenter: Liz King is the Manager of the Skin Cancer Prevention Unit at Cancer Council NSW and works to support social environments and individual behaviours that promote good sun protection and reduce the risk of skin cancer through strategic program, policy and advocacy initiatives.

With a background in psychology and Masters in Public Health, Liz has a diverse public health background, including government and non-government program and service delivery. This work spans pandemic planning; mass media public health social marketing campaigns; community based obesity and diabetes prevention; national bowel and breast\cancer screening and lung cancer service delivery; and psychosocial support services for people living with cancer.

Liz is passionate about working with other agencies to help integrate UV protection policies and practices into shared practice. With a new sun protection outdoor worker program on offer, exploring advocacy and cross-collaboration opportunities with relevant workplaces has become an exciting new area of focus.
